Start your day in Cuenca with a visit to El Barranco, the picturesque riverside area lined with colonial buildings overlooking the River Tomebamba. Stroll along the riverbanks and admire the views, stopping at el Puente Roto, the historic “broken bridge” built in the 1840s. Today, it serves as a venue for local markets and cultural events, offering a glimpse into the city’s history and vibrant community life.
Next, explore Pumapungo, the ancient Inca city now preserved as an archaeological park. Wander along walking paths through the ruins and beautifully maintained gardens featuring native plants and llamas. Visit the on-site museum to learn about the history and culture of the Inca and Cañari civilizations, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds this fascinating site.
Continue to Parque Paraíso, Cuenca’s largest urban park, covering 17 hectares of green space. Here, two rivers pass through the park, which offers walking and bike paths, picnic areas, football fields, and a children’s play area. Take some time to relax by the pond, watch the ducks and geese, and enjoy the calm and beauty of this popular city spot.
The tour also includes Quinta Bolívar, the historic residence where Simón Bolívar stayed during his visits to Cuenca, and the San Joaquín neighborhood, known for its traditional vegetable gardens that continue to supply the city. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a delicious traditional Ecuadorian lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants. The itinerary can also be customized to fit your interests, making this a full and memorable day exploring the best of Cuenca.
End your day with wonderful memories of Cuenca’s culture, history, and natural beauty, taking with you the essence of this charming city.
